Audi broke new ground when it released the first-generation R8 for the 2008 model year. Low and wide, the R8 benefited from Audi's expertise in using aluminum to save weight. It launched with a V8 engine mounted behind the passenger compartment, though a V10 joined the range later in the production run. Production of the original R8 (called Type 42 internally) ended in 2015.
